In the paper, GES board members Prof. Dr. Estelle Herlyn and Prof. Dr. Franz Josef Radermacher criticise Western countries that want to dictate their energy policies to developing and emerging countries – in the sense of renewables-only, but at the same time call on various African states to supply more oil and gas to Europe. Fossil energy sources will be needed for a long time to come, not only in Germany, for example for the base load and to control volatility. In developing and emerging countries, economic development will be massively slowed down if fossil fuels are not an option. This in a situation where energy poverty in Africa is very real, where still 600 million people have no electricity connection.
