“Verschollen – Schmutzige Geschäfte mit dem Klimaschutz” (Lost – Dirty Deals with Climate Protection) is the title of an ARD feature film production that was broadcast at the end of 2025 and accompanied by a documentary. The focus of criticism is alleged greenwashing with climate certificates. Quote: “Billions in tax money are to be used to ‘reforest’ Brazil, which is supposed to bind CO2. This is supposed to compensate for CO2emissions. But research shows that nature is not being reforested, but destroyed for huge eucalyptus- plantations.” There is no question that abuses must be named. Overall, however, GES believes that the ARD’s portrayal is one-sided and biased. We actually see great opportunities in Brazilian forest plantations as part of a comprehensive transformation strategy. They combine sustainable land use, industrial value creation, and climate protection in a way that is highly relevant internationally.
