Individual mobility is a central component of modern societies and a prerequisite for economic participation, social equality of opportunity and personal freedom. To preserve the benefits of mobility, climate-friendly solutions must also be found for this sector. GES believes that the decarbonisation of road transport requires an open-technology and scientifically grounded approach. Alongside battery-electric powertrains, hybrid solutions (including range extenders) and internal combustion engines running on climate-friendly fuels will also play a role in the long term. In this regard, GES advocates technological competition – rather than bans. We propose a cost-effective and socially acceptable transformation pathway. We are planning further, concrete proposals for the implementation of this far-reaching programme.
