How can Germany deal responsibly with highly radioactive waste?

The search for a final repository for high-level radioactive waste will take many more years. This effectively makes interim storage a long-term task. At the same time, technology is continuing to advance in this field. For example, treating high-level radioactive waste could, in some cases, drastically reduce its half-lives. Current GES activities in this field are not aimed at countering the search for a final repository, nor at a disguised return to nuclear energy, but rather propose evaluating alternatives for the management of high-level radioactive waste according to uniform criteria. At an event organised by GES and 4Pi-Solutions in Berlin on 20 May, we brought together different perspectives: scientific, technological, business and political. The most important outcome is a roadmap for the responsible handling of the possible alternatives for managing high-level radioactive waste.
