Climate-neutral coal and gas-fired power plants

The new report by FAWn and GES – sponsored by the Vector Foundation – covers two areas of technology: Fossil fuel power plants, which account for around 20 to 25 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, and vehicles with internal combustion engines, of which around 1.4 billion are in use worldwide. With the help of carbon capture, CO2 can be captured directly at fossil-fuelled power plants and then processed together with hydrogen into synthetic fuels. In China alone, there is huge potential for retrofitting coal-fired power plants with carbon capture technology. Combining fossil-fuelled power plants with synthetic fuels creates a win-win situation in the mobility sector, both technologically and economically.
