The topic of the energy transition has finally reached the election campaign in Germany. The demands range from ‘tear down all wind turbines’ to ‘switch everything to renewables’. Both positions are more than unwise.

GES advocates limiting the expansion of volatile renewables (solar and wind) in the German electricity sector to around 50 per cent. At the same time, the mix of renewables should also be optimised. Photovoltaics are currently the main source of expansion in Germany. This can lead to serious problems in the grid. This is because PV is significantly more volatile than offshore wind.
