When will nuclear fusion be commercially viable at the earliest? Experts say: realistically, not until after 2045. This means that the technology is currently irrelevant for the German energy transition. The same applies to Germany’s 2045 climate targets. So why should we still be concerned with nuclear fusion? Because development is currently very dynamic and positive. Because the technology holds great promise: namely, unlimited potential for CO2-free, weather-independent power generation with virtually inexhaustible fuels. And last but not least, because Germany is very well positioned in this field of technology. Manfred Schroeder has written a background paper on the potential and current developments.
