How much does it cost to avoid one tonne of CO₂? In industrialised countries, the cost can easily reach 1,000 euros or even more in many areas. Examples include energy-efficient renovation of houses and promoting electric vehicles. Looking at the situation in emerging and developing countries, the costs are often on a completely different scale, at around 50 euros per tonne of CO2. This is particularly true for nature-based solutions such as reforestation or humus formation. These figures offer opportunities for reallocating financial resources for the 2030 Agenda and thus for the environment and development. Climate-friendly development is anything but a sure-fire success. Without large transfers of money from North to South, no solution is in sight. Industrialised countries can do whatever they want at home, but it will not be nearly enough. Franz Josef Radermacher from GES develops a positive perspective for the period from 2050 to 2070 based on the ideas in our book “ALL IN!”, published in October 2024.
