Interview Kai Schaefer

Kai Schaefer, Schaefer Kalk

The German lime industry emits 6 million tonnes of CO2 per year . Two thirds of this cannot be avoided because they are produced when the lime is burnt. Another third comes from the fuels used in the processes. In order to bring the emissions of the lime industry (and those of the cement industry as well) to zero, carbon capture is therefore imperative. The German legal situation, however, prohibits the transport as well as the injection of CO2 on German soil. Kai Schaefer of Schaefer Kalk sees some movement on the part of politicians. But there is still a long way to go before a functioning carbon management system is in place. In the interview, Schaefer says we should not leave the business of injecting CO2 to other European countries. All the prerequisites are also in place in Germany.
